F.O.N.E.B.O.N.E.

Sometimes bits of history are silly, or start out to be silly, and turn serious.

FONEBONE was the idea of Piper of Everon, though when the Mearsiean girls were brought in, inevitably it took on a typical Mearsiean character. The idea was for all the kids in prominent positions (and not-prominent as well--no one was to be left out) to band together and establish a watchdog organization against Norsunder. They didn't trust adults, who hadn't done a great job so far. Adults' motivations were opaque, but it seemed that they were easily swayed into evil because they were greedy, ambitious, and loved being the Big Boss. Kids, of course, had no such ambitions, were trustworthy, and wouldn't be swayed by inanities such as disgustingly mushy romance, or other forms of what C.J. Sherwood called "adultery"--the definition of which was, "Behaving like a typical adult."

So the high-minded, morally superior kids who had met and made friendships, or almost-friendships, or at least learned to get along with one another, banded together. And to make certain the adults would not take notice of them and thus try to organize and direct them for their own good, everyone agreed on adopting the Mearsiean girls' strategy for naming their underground hideout "The Junky": if you used a silly name, nobody wanted to bother finding out what it was. Whereas, Ye Sekrit Organization For Fighting Norsunder would sort of call attention to itself.

So C.J. and her friends took on the task of naming the organization and its sub-groups, divided by kingdom. She mostly relied on English and then translated it back, and most of the kids, when given the full explanation, either loved the names or went along with them because the leader kids did.

Unfortunately, no one expected Norsundrian kids--some of them helpfully running Fonebone, and considering it all a prime joke.

Specifics of the Organization

Thus we had "Fonebone" or FONEBONE or F.O.N.E.B.O.N.E.--the initials standing for Federated Organization to Negate 11s by Organized New Enforcementtactics

There were two subgroups, divided for speed of communications, ANGEL and UGH:

Kingdom Groups under ANGEL:

ANGEL 'west' (Amalgamated Network Groups Enforce Legation)--the word 'amalgamated' being a popular one as no one knew what it meant, including CJ, but she'd seen it in MAD MAGAZINE on Earth, about the only thing she missed that didn't translate over to Sartorias-deles.

  • KLUNK--Colend--the kids in charge being Shad and Karia, offspring of a scribe.

Kids' Legal Underground for Norsunder Klodding--

  • KRUD--Danaran, "Terry Larensar", the king, being its head, though Lad, his best friend, did most of the leg work.

Kids' Reunited Underground of Danarans

  • GYMSOCK--Sartor's group, ostensibly under the queen, Yustnesveas Landis. She never actually did anything but receive communications because she hadn't time, but she was popular, so they worked around that.

Group of Youths Made up of Sartorans Organized to Clunk Klods

  • AMEBAS--Wnelder Vee, ostensibly run by Glenn Delieth, the young king, but he was too busy trying to build an army, so his sister Tahra took responsibility . . . and so did one of Glenn's new friends.

Group of Legal Underground Tenations

Kingdom Groups under UGH:

UGH 'east'Unified Group of 11 Harassers''

Batheads Against Rat Finks

  • SMELL of 11s--Marloven Hess, with Senrid Montredaun-An in charge--few in that country were actually aware of Fonebone, but Senrid did his best to go along with the silly side because he was determined on the serious side. He didn't care what form it took; he wanted fast communication of any news of 11 sightings.

Social Merger Enforcing Legal Lynchings of 11s

  • SMELL 2-- Vasande Leror became "Smell 2" though actually Kyale and Leander were Senrid's go-betweens when he couldn't get away from duty, so they pretty much represented both countries.
  • SAP--Geranda/Setazhia
